Megan Marlatt & her paintings

Continuing my video examinations of artists exhibiting at Les Yeux du Monde in Charlottesville, VA., I've created this piece about painter and professor Megan Marlatt.

My thanks to Megan.

CHOOSE

CHOOSE from Man Made Wilderness on Vimeo.

This is one that came to me from good friend Craig MacDonald in upstate New York. He's been recording music with friends from his high school days, the band now christened Old Scots. They get together maybe once a year, but Craig has managed to produce an entire album of music with the three of them playing together, by passing digital files back and forth. The same was done with this video. As can be seen, the images come from four different sources, and I managed through the wonders of software to stuff them into a single format that is viewable.

back again

We can't seem to resist returning to the same places over and over to find photographs. It was inevitable, somehow, that I would make another trip to this abandoned brick yard. I doubt that I'm done with it yet.

This photo from the interior is by fellow photographer Dave Metcalf, who was a much appreciated companion on this foray inside a large abandoned warehouse with a long row of ovens.

Nearly a week later, I've still not managed to do anything with my own photographs from this outing. Could this be the end of film and me? Actually, it's the lure of video that still has me in it's grip (see previous entry.)

never ending fascination

click 'er for bigger

thanks to CLW for this one

We've had a lot of this stuff around here lately, the cause of much consternation and anguish. Including a 50+ hour power outtage last weekend. Through that ordeal, we tried to maintain our humor - and some warmth as the interior temp of the house dipped into the 40's at night. Photography helped me through, so there are going to be some more of these pictures coming along in the near future.

What Is Inspiration? - Sonnet (homework)

I am standing here, beneath the gray clouds,
Hid by the shadow of the rain. It seems
That I had come here to escape the crowds,
But every drop soaks me and flows in streams.
My ears are filled with the thuds as they land,
Blending into a dull roar around me.
A thought occurs as I hold out my hand,
Which splatters the droplets that surround me:
Being alone is harder than you think.
Even in dark, there is something waiting
To turn on the light, even the black ink
Is made of colors. Here I am, stating
That I am alone, when I have the rain,
The sky, the music, and nothing to gain.
